It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Doreen Hurford (nee Mitchell) in Welland on October 5, 2019 at the age of 83.
Born in Stamford England, Doreen immigrated to Canada in 1955. She trained as a nurse at the Grace Maternity Hospital in Halifax Nova Scotia. During this time, Doreen met a young airman named William John Hurford whom she married in 1959. The young newlyweds were stationed in Germany and upon their return to Canada four years later, they brought their two young children back with them.
The family eventually settled in Welland and Kevin was added to the family. Doreen spent most of the rest of her nursing career at Port Colborne General Hospital until her retirement. Recently she and Bill celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary by renewing their vows.
Doreen had many gifts and interests. She crocheted beautiful afghans and made intricate paper toles. A royalist through and through, every Christmas morning all celebrations would stop in order to listen to the Queen’s message.
Doreen will be greatly missed by her husband Bill, sister Beryl, children Ken, Cathryne and Kevin, grandchildren Diane, Caitlin, Jennifer and Mitchell, her great grandchildren Elizabeth and Simon and her many friends and family.
In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place with arrangements entrusted to the ARMSTRONG FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 179 Clarence Street, Port Colborne.
If so desired, memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario or the Canadian Liver Foundation.
