Obituary of Samuel Riedke
November 15, 1922 - September 7, 2019
With heavy hearts, we announce the loss of our father, Sam, who passed away with loving family at his side at Port Colborne Hospital in his 97th year. Predeceased by his beloved wife of over 56 years Erna (nee Fritz).
Loving father to Renate Michael (Wayne), Gertrud Riedke (Grant), Ingrid Riedke Engeli and Gary Riedke (Janis). Much loved Opa to Erik (Meagan), K. Alexander (Sampo), Rachel, Lindsey and Kyle. Cherished Uropa to Freyja. He will be missed by his sister-in-law Benita Riedke (late Adolf), niece Anita and nephews Arthur and Robert and their families. Also predeceased by his 4 sisters and 3 brothers in Germany. He will be fondly remembered by many relatives there.
Having married in 1949, in Bad Bramstedt, Germany, Sam and Erna emigrated to Canada with their daughter in December 1951, settling in Port Colborne, where their family continued to grow. Sam worked for several employers over the ensuing years, especially as a skilled mason on many area homes, including his own, and eventually went to work for Stelco in Welland. He also enjoyed his hobbies of wine-making, pigeon-racing, and, as a founding member of the Club Rheingold, heartily participated in many social events and dances with family and friends there. He enjoyed music and loved to dance. Blessed with a strong faith in God, a great love of family, and a sparkling sense of humour, he brought love and laughter to all he met.
The family extends sincere thanks to all the PSW’s, caregivers, neighbours and friends, especially long-time family friend Linde Behr, for their compassion and care.
The family will receive friends at the ARMSTRONG FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 179 Clarence Street, Port Colborne on Wednesday, September 11, 2019 from 6-9 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, September 12, 2019 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church (200 Erie Street) at 1:00 p.m. with visitation at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery, Bethel.
