Born on March 16th, 1944, John passed away at Douglas Memorial Hospital on Monday September 9th, 2019 at the age of 75.
A dedicated family man, John is survived by his beloved Ruby, children John (Lisa) and Shelley, grandchildren Zack (Eleni) and Carli, and great-granddaughter Margo.
John was a supervisor in the research department at Inco for 32 years and continued to work in his "retirement" years travelling to many areas of the world as a consultant for Inco.
John's greatest joy was as an avid dragonboat racer for the Welland Warlocks. He made the Canadian National dragonboat racing team at the age of 69 and then again at the age of 71, travelling to Hungary for the World competition and then again in the World competition in Welland where many gold medals were won.
He was admired for his dedication to physical fitness and health and attended the gym daily prior to his illness. He was also a marathon runner in his younger years.
The family extends special thanks to Drs. Graystone, Makar and Scher, as well as the Welland Hospital ER and Fort Erie Hospital Palliative Care for their exceptional end of life care-especially nurses Allison and Abby in Welland and Jennifer in Fort Erie- although there were many others who provided truly amazing care.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place with arrangements entrusted to the ARMSTRONG FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 179 Clarence Street, Port Colborne.
There will be a celebration of his life and paddling career on Saturday, November 2nd, 2019 from 12-4 p.m. at the Welland International Flatwater Centre, 16 Townline Tunnel Road. The Heritage Arts Legacy will hold a memorial race for John at the 3rd race at the Fort Erie Racetrack on Sunday, September 29th. The Post time is 2:15 p.m.
John was loved and admired by many and will be missed very, very much.
If so desired, memorial donations may be made to the Welland Warlocks.
